We came to eat last Saturday and had a fantastic meal. The 'not-duck' rolls were divine, but the beetroot and halloumi stack could have done with an extra piece of halloumi. Apart from that there were no complaints and we will definitely be visiting you again. Gutted to find out that I'd missed out on seein Martin Stephenson & Daintees perform a few weeks earlier.
We brought my partners parents to Canteen on Thursday 20th May to see Stacy Earle and Mark Stewart. It was a fantastic night and we all really enjoyed the intimate nature of the gig and hope they will do more in the future. The food was as fab as usual and Wayne made mild versions for the in laws which was really lovely and much appreciated. Can't wait to see who they have playing next!
We ate in the Canteen on Saturday and the food was interesting and delicious as it always is. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service friendly. We've just eaten the extra portions of tamale and red mole for our tea and it was just as tasty the following day! Thanks and keep up the good work!

Excellent place. Really nice atmosphere. Passionate and friendly chefs who obviously care deeply about what they do. A real feel-good restaurant.
Food was outstanding (and incredible value). Really interesting, varied and balanced. Wine was delicious and reasonably priced. I feel i have to put in the obligatory meat-eater compliment that i didn't notice or miss having meat in any of the dishes :-)

Hoping to head back this Saturday.
The food is of a superb standard and excellent value for money. The best vegetarian eatery I have ever visited.
we simply dont eat anywhere else now ,why would we with such variety in the ever changing menu-great stuff and we can take the meat eaters with us -sorted
I've got to visit having read all of these reviews. Expect to see us before the end of the month!
Gorgeous food. Shame you add a meat dish (I don't think it would be too difficult for carnivore friends to go without just for one night). Vegetarians/Vegans generally feel unerved at the thought of meat dishes being cooked in the same kitchen. On my 3rd visit, once again I found you don't have enough staff. They work flat out yet are always friendly and smiley. We had to wait almost an hour for dessert, which spoilt the whole experience.
As someone said earlier, a few tweaks and it could be the making of a fantastic local eating place.
Thanks for another lovely evening on when we visited on 3rd October - the food was fabulous (as always!) and we were thrilled to have won a yummy bottle of wine in your newsletter, which we finished off at home..... ;-) Lovely to see the place so busy, too.
Good luck for the VegSoc awards, you really deserve it! See you soon, we're fancying the new menu...

We came for a meal on 2/10/09 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Never before have we been welcomed by the chef who then returned at the end of the meal for our comments. My husband and I are not vegetarian but enjoy vegetarian food. Out friend is vegetarian and as she has just moved to Cardiff was delighted to find 'Canteen'. I loved all of it! My husband and friend had clean plates but one or two comments that they shared with Wayne who seemed genuinely interested. We visit South Wales regularly from our home in North Wales and will be back! We all love the fact that the menu changes regularly, it was well -priced and we spent the whole meal discussing and enjoying the food. A great evening. Our compliments to the chef!
I had high hopes for this place and made it part of my reasons to travel from Leicester to Cardiff. However the location nearly put me off when i arrived! The food was ok...but nothing outstanding, it desciption implied it was much more than what actually arrived when we ordered....the sopa aztec with corn chips, was just a veg/ tomatoe based broth with 3 tortilla on top. Overall the starters and mains were alittle disappointing, and lacked basic seasoning, the desserts were good however. The service left a bit to be desired and was definately not with a smile! Perhaps my experience was a one off....or perhaps my expectations were too high. This could be a little gold mine with just a few tweeks. Please get in touch if you are ever around Leicester, it would be my pleasure to take you to some veggie places here.
Just wanted you to know I had a lovely evening, was a lovely way to spend my first vegan-versary!! The sticky toffee cake was amazing!! Thank you so much!
Finally ate here last night after months of not quite getting around to it. Had possibly one of the nicest meals I've ever had, and also one of the most reasonably priced! I've spent the day telling everyone I meet how lovely it was, so hopefully I'll be able to get a table when I next book!
Awesome, seriously.
How about setting up a fan page on facebook?
Thank you so much for a lovely evening out tonight- both the service and the food was second to none. As a vegetarian who is allergic to wheat, it is so difficult to eat out and have confidence in what I am served but you have turned that all on it's head and even the carnivore went for the veggie options!
We can't wait to come again!
Sian and Mal. :-)
Loved your restaurant when we came a few months ago. You were all so friendly and accomodating and the food was delicious. Was definitely the highlight of our trip to Cardiff. Especially the sticky toffee pud ... YUM! Keep up the good work.
The Canteen is a God send and a total inspiration. Love this place, highly recommend.
Hi guys!! Just wanted to say Thank You for hosting my Hen Night (Sat 3rd Jan 2009). All your hard work, from planning the meals in advance (Susie's Evening 'M-henu') to looking after us so well on the night, helped make it really special for me and fun and memorable for everyone there. And it has to be said - your food is amazing! All 20 of us - from the meat eaters, to the vegans, veggies and ceoliacs - agreed it was superb. So, again, Thank You so much for a brilliant evening!
Just a quick message to say Happy 1st Birthday Canteen on clifton street (may there be many more!)!!!
We try to eat there whenever in the capital, and have always enjoyed the adventurous menu!
Would like to recommend the restaurant to all!
Ate here tonight and felt compelled to write as soon as I got home..
Food, service and prices fantastic.. a big bonus for Adamsdown and Cardiff. I can't believe I have such a great restaurant practically on my doorstep! Have booked again for next week.
The ravioli starter was outstanding.. .
In the words of Homer Simpson.. my best score yet, 5 thumbs up!
Was at the Canteen last Saturday & had a fantastic meal. The waiting staff here are the best in Wales - there should be a competition for waiters & waitresses - well there is for Restaurants. Really lovely atmosphere & the food is nothing short of great - actually it is the best food in Cardiff - by a long shot.
The music is good & I would have loved to have a chat with others there - they all looked interesting - maybe this place attracts interesting people!!!
The area is not pretty but it too is certainly interesting - I love this.
In my opinion - the best restaurant in Cardiff by a longshot
Really sad to see you're not open at lunchtimes any more. Popped over for a girlie Saturday lunch last week to find no one there. I will miss your delicious pasta and risotto dishes, and Saturdays will not be the same without your sticky toffee cake! Looking forward to trying out the latest evening menu soon though.
Visited the Canteen last night and I can't speak highly enough of it. The service was warm and inviting and the food was amazing. I had given up on eating out as vege meals are always so disappointing. However, I have to say I was not disappointed with the fantastic food I was served last night. I had to stop my meat loving husband from trying to savour the vege delights on my plate after he had devoured his lamb curry! Also, what I really liked was that Wayne the chef took the time at the end of the evening to have a chat with us. I love the philosophy behind the Canteen. We will definitely be back. I can't wait!
We experienced another wonderful foodie evening at Canteen last night while sampling Wayne's Italian menu. Loved the courgette cannelloni, the aubergine ripieni and the white chocolate risotto (fab). This restaurant is truly a culinary delight!! Also to be recommended is Wayne's singing!! If you haven't tried Canteen, make it a must this weekend.

Wow! A nearly all-vegetarian restaurant in Wales--and one that is offering a menu inspired by my very favorite restaurant from home: Millennium Restaurant!
I found a listing for Canteen on Clifton Street, followed the link, and had a wonderful time exploring your website, including Wayne's answers. Hooray for a restauranteur that understands the necessity of keeping cookware "vegetarian kosher".
I mapped the location and directions from my hotel and eagerly looked for the opening hours... only to find that--Darn!--not open tonight. It's my last night in Wales before I head to London and so I will, sadly, miss out on your Millennium menu.
I am a recent transplant from the San Francisco Bay Area and a vegetarian of 21 years. It's so hard moving from the epicenter of excellent cutting-edge vegetarian cuisine to, well, the land of black pudding. Eek!
So sorry to have not had the opportunity to sample your versions of recipes from my favorite place back home. Keep up the good work-- Cheers, Stacey
I was one of the "Girls" on Lou Johnson's hen night and I totally agree with her. The atmosphere and the food were great, especially the chocolate and stout pudding! I got very excited when I tasted it. Very kindly you said you would put it on the website and I'm glad to see you were true to your word. I will be making it as I've been telling everyone about how wonderful it is. Thanks again for a great night. X
Wonderful to find somewhere different with such an interesting menu. Fantastic meal last night. Thank you!
Well, blow me! What a find...
Me and four of my best mates were on my hen weekend, staying further west near Llantwit Major. But as I'm Cardiff-born and bred, we thought a night reaping the delights of Welsh food-fare was required. The Canteen matched our expectations and more.
We were sat right by the kitchen, a let-down in any other restaurant, but here seeing the chefs weave their magic at work (& play) was all part of the culinary delight. The food was fast, fresh, tasty and very inventive. The five of us vowed to return, and that was before we'd even got to the sweet course. The Chocolate & Stout pudding really was the best desert any of us had ever tasted, and I'm really pleased to see the recipe for it on your download list - thanks. In one word, this place is SUPERB!!
Looking forward to my return trips to Cardiff where your food, music and ambience will definately be on the itinerary!!
many thanks.
Lou
What a find!
This place was perfect for catching up with old friends, eating great food and drinking wine - all excellent value. If only eating out was always this good! Only sad thing is that it's in Cardiff and I'm in Nottingham!
the St patricks day feast - the lads in the kitchen excelled themselves. The guiness and steak pie with the bread and butter pudding and chocolate sauce to follow? An instant classic. You would have to be considered clinically insane to have missed it. The chefs would have to be considered so if they never cook it again
Well done "the Canteen" - you're the best eatery in Cardiff bar none
We visited on Valentines day and had a fantastic meal, without all the usual over priced tat that you get elsewhere. Very friendly chef and staff, and fast efficient service, A little gem!!!
My boyfriend and i had the most delicious meal, in the nicest surroundings ever with you, on valentines day, the food was so nice and the staff were very friendly and so helpful. I have reccomended you to many people and will look forward to coming again soon :)
Canteen on Clifton St is my new favourite place to eat. I had guests for the weekend, made a really late booking knowing nothing about Canteen and it was fantastic. I've been out for dinner with my vegetarain friend often enough to know how frustrating it is to have only one choice or make a meal out of starters. Love the fact that you've turned it on it's head and offer one meat dish among delicious veg. options. The mutton tagin was so flavoursome, I can still relive it in quiet moments.
have recommended you to everyone I know!
Thanks
Victoria
We had a Valentine's Day meal at the Canteen and loved it! Great food and really warm, friendly service. Will come back and eat again!
Hiya chefs de village (I'll tell you that story when I see you),
I've set up a 'Clifton Street is cool' page on Facebook. It's 3 days old and it's already got 48 members.
Check it out.

I nicked a couple of your site photo's if that's altright ?
had an absolutely gorgeous meal there a couple of weeks back, there were four of us and so we tried everything pretty much, was all fabulous. Look forward to visiting again soon!
hi, iv looked at your menus on this site after reading about you in buzz, im a chef working in cardiff and im actually jealous of how creative and interesting your menus are, braised oxtail is a fantastic dish, i hope you get the customers that will appreicate this food.
We'd been looking forward to eating here for a while and we were not disappointed! Lovely, tasty, fresh ingredients on the lunch menu and good prices. It's a pity you're not open a bit later in the evenings though and gutted that there is meat served as I was expecting a vegetarian place.
After yet another fabulous evening at this cosy little restuarant,,i felt i had to say someting.Suzy and I hav been dining here almost every week since it opened and its just getting better and better!!! I have to say i have had my eyes and palette opened to vegetarian food. The meals are always tasty and full of fresh healthy ingredients,,beautifully presented,,generous portions aswell. The guys that run this restuarnt are really friendly excellent cooks who know their stuff,.Cant wait to see what next week brings....
Really looking forward to trying the new menu. The meal we had a fortnight ago was delicious. Really enjoyed our night out and wish you sucess for the future.
Hiyyyyaaaaa.
I haven't been to visit you yet as I've been working loads recently, but I'm looking forward to the pleasure. I've been a Vegetarian for 30 years and lived in Splott for the last 20. I lived in Hackney for 9 years and was used to having these kind of places nearby, so I'm in Heaven. Isn't Clifton Street at a turning Point with 'Simply Steve's' Deli/patisserie and 'Hungry Planet' Wholefood/alternative shop opening recently. I'll see you this week!
We visited your restaurant for the first time last night, the first big night out in the New Year! We had a fabulous meal (we can recommend the Chillie Bean Parcel) and the choice of Starters was great too. Loved the personal touch when Wayne introduced himself, the general atmosphere, the quirky music and my husband appreciated the photography! This restaurant has all the ingredients for a huge success. We will certainly be back, especially with the promise of a change of menu every two weeks. It is good to escape Penarth at last!!
The best BLT baguette I have ever had. Freshly prepared and the bacon was cooked just the way I like it. Many thanks!!!
Truly the best of luck with the restaurant
So nice to find somewhere to eat close to home. We were passing last night on our way for a curry in City Road and took a chance. Lovely cooked food; we will definately pop in again.
We dropped by last night to try out the fare. Good food and service with friendly front of house people. Will keep an eye on the menu and pop in again.
Thanks for the vodka liqueur tasting.
All the best.
Alvin & Meriel
We thought that having a restaurant the did a 3-course vegan meal of an evening not 100yds from our front door would be something from the realms of fantasy. After all, where can you eat out if you are a vegan? And 3-courses???
Well, from fantasy into reality, as we found out at Canteen on Clifton Street, a new venture from Messers Thomas and Thomas (or Wayne and Tony to their friends).
Friendly, relaxed, good food, reasonable prices - what more could one ask for?
Vegan?
Oh yes!
I have eated there quite a few times now since it opened and I think its fabulous. Anyone who is reading this without having been there is missing out.........its a must!
sounds good
will try soon!
Great web site. Leaving Oz to visit Wales in April. Will make a point of visting and tasting the cuisine. Sounds an excellent venture, hope it all goes well. Do you have a kids menu ? Wine list could be improved with a good Aussie Shiraz ! Cheers, G.
I had the set evening menu - pepper soup, mushroom pudding & white chocolate chesecake all of which was to die for!!! couldnt fault anything. my friend( a meat eater- had the spiced persian lamb) we both cant wait to return!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s the chefs are quite tasty also. x
Had lunch yesterday and was pleasantly surprised, I was expecting a greasy spoon and got good, fresh pasta instead. I will be back. The evening menu looks very good, but I did notice that you don't take credit cards, which makes it more difficult.
